Piece values

In chess, each piece is associated with an approximate point value that reflects its relative power on the chessboard. These point values are used by players and analysts to assess the overall material advantage and evaluate the relative strength of different positions.

  1. Pawn (♙, ♟): 1 point

  2. Knight (♘, ♞): 3 points

  3. Bishop (♗, ♝): 3 points

  4. Rook (♖, ♜): 5 points

  5. Queen (♕, ♛): 9 points

  6. King (♔, ♚): The King is invaluable since its loss results in the end of the game. However, for point comparison purposes, it is often assigned an extremely high value or considered incalculable.

These point values are not absolute and can vary depending on the specific position and stage of the game. In certain situations, the value of a piece may be higher or lower than its standard point value based on some factors like its activity, potential threats, and overall position on the board.
